NOTICE TO ALL OAK HILL CEMETERY PLOT OWNERS
Attention All Cemetery Plot Owners
February 2020
The City of Smithville owns and maintains two cemeteries – Oak Hill Cemetery and Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. The cemetery rules for grave decorations, per our city ordinances, Section 1.200, are posted near the gazebo at Oak Hill Cemetery. These same rules are available for review online through the City of Smithville web page by clicking on “City Government” / “Ordinances”.
There are many items on and near grave sites at Oak Hill Cemetery which are prohibited by the rules which govern the decorations on grave plots. Section 1.213 – Decoration of Plots, currently states as follows:
- Certain Ornaments Prohibited. The placing of boxes, cans, shells, toys, metal designs, ornaments, signs, cards, ads, chairs, settees, vases, glass, wood, or iron cases, concrete urns, concrete benches, pictures, and similar articles, or any article other than the approved family memorial, upon plots shall not be permitted, and if so placed, the cemetery reserves the right to remove same without notice to the plot owner.
All families are encouraged to remove items on your grave spaces which do not conform to the ordinance as soon as possible. After July 1, 2020, the City of Smithville will make a complete sweep of Oak Hill Cemetery and remove any item(s) which are prohibited.
