LCRA “Steps Forward” Day in Smithville
Approximately 45-50 volunteers from LCRA partnered with representatives from the City of Smithville to participate in the 2016 Steps Forward Day project. “Steps Forward” is an LCRA company-wide day of service where LCRA employees “pay it forward” by volunteering to support community projects throughout the region. Two community projects were supported in Smithville. The first project was to trim bushes, replace landscape timbers, and repaint the curbs and curb stops at the Smithville Police Department. The second project was to remove brush and trim trees along the river on both sides of the lighted Fishing Pier at Riverbend Park to provide better access to the water. LCRA provided the equipment (bulldozer), tools (chainsaws and loppers), and manpower necessary to support the both projects with minimal oversight by the City. Phil Wilson (LCRA CEO) even stopped by to lend a helping hand. The City realized significant cost savings through LCRA’s generous donation of labor and equipment. It is estimated that more than 350 man-hours were spent by LCRA supporting these projects. The improvements to the Smithville Police Department and Riverbend Park look excellent. The City is fortunate to have LCRA as a conscientious corporate partner committed to enhancing the quality of life through water stewardship, energy and community service. Programs like Steps Forward and the Community Development Partnership Program (CDPP) have definitely made a positive impact within our community and the City of Smithville looks forward to working with LCRA in the future.
