Legacy Portrait Project

We want your opinion! Please click on this link to take a survey about who should be honored through the Legacy Portrait project.

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) awarded a grant to the Smithville Public Library as part of the Cultural District for several public art projects. Among them, the "Smithville Legacy Portraits" mural will be painted on the Wastewater Treatment Tank on SH95 across from the Rec Center.

During Phase 1 (which occurred during August and September), Smithville residents were asked to nominate individuals for this project and to identify any themes that they thought would be most appropriate. The majority chose the theme "historical figures," but this was followed closely by people who wanted to honor Veterans, Educators, the Creative Community, the Chamber's "Citizen of the Year," and Community Leaders in general.

Now we need to narrow down those nominations to just five. Please help to select which five of the following individuals should be painted at that location. Please rank the individuals in each of the categories, and let us know why you selected that top choice.

In historical terms, a legacy is something that is handed down from one period of time to another period of time. Often it means something handed down from an ancestor or predecessor. (Definition from simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legacy)

When you consider the nominees for this project, think about the legacy of their lives and how their deeds continue to shape and inform what Smithville is all about today.

This survey will be closed on October 5th at noon. The artist will be ready to paint between October 20-27, and we are looking for volunteers to help. Please help spread the word and let's hear from everyone!

Thank you for your help, and please pass this information along to people you think will be interested!
